As always, consult your doctor.
Shin splints as I know it, is an inflammation of the tendons/ligaments. Caused typically by people new to training starting a high impact exercise such as running on hard ground.

Unfortunately, the main cure is rest. While running hurts now, if you continue through the pain, even walking will become uncomfortable.

A few weeks of low impact exercise such as rowing, cycling, power walking, swimmig or an eliptical training machine will allow you to continue training but without pain. These exercises along with daily stretches of the calf and shins will allow the tendons to heal, strengthen, and prevent future injury.
