I was wondering what you think of this.

Surely a true martial artist should have honour and disapline.

And only use his or her art in the form of self defence

IE.To perserve his/her own life or the lifes of others.

These guys are nothing more than brawlers. But I suppose on the plus side the dojo rules goes out the window when it comes to street fighting.

What do you think yourselfs?

"Surely a true martial artist should have honour and disapline."

What makes you think that MMA fighters don't have discipline? They don't go around beating people up on the streets. It's a competition, just like a Karate competition, apart from the lack of rules enabling anyone to enter, no matter what they train in.

Can't believe you call them 'brawlers' - how much do you actually know about MMA? Seen many events? or watched any documentaries?

If not, you need to.

I,ll be Honest Robsco i,ve only seen it a fewtimes and havent made up my mind about it and will need to get more information on it.

I did enjoy it and I do enjoy competions. But I do believe on any other level ie.street fighting then martial arts should only be used for self defence

Yup, on the streets MA should only be used for Self-Defence, as i said, these guys don't go around beating people up for the fun of it.

MMA simple gives fighters an arena to compete against fighters from other styles, but to do this you can't have many rules since they may favour one particular style.

In most cases, the fighters will train in 3-4 different arts, taking aspects from each style to compete.

Man has a desire to kick ass,and mma is a good excuse to do that.Man has a desire to prove that he is better than the other man,mma is a good excuse to do that. The real world where men strive to win.Has for going round beating people up in the street no disrepect meant rob but fighters do this(gracie on the beach, boxers always having brawls).Fighters are natural animals, and that instinct is hard to switch on and off like a button.

I don't know of any MMA fighters who go around beating people up for the fun of it. Fair enough, if they get started on, then they will kick arse, but they don't go looking for trouble.

For one, it would ruin the sport if all the fighters just went on a rampage for the fun of it.

Plus, what exactly do you get out of beating someone up who has no chance against you? I've seen street brawlers walk into say a thai boxing gym, and 3 months later they don't go around causing trouble anymore. But we're talking about guys (and gals) who have been training for 10 years or more.

I'm sure there's one or two, but they are definately the exception to the rule.

Can i just say guys that training in MMA or martial arts doesn't make you top dog when it comes to fighting on the streets!

Street fighting is an area in which there are no comfort zones, no rules and no breaks to catch your breath. You can't watch video footage months before hand of who your gonna fight and you dont get to wear nice pretty gloves to protect your hands. Also who walks around the streets, clubs or pubs with just a pair of shorts or speedo's on? No one!

MMA, Martial Arts and Boxing are simply sports and should never be confused with reality. Just because a guy is good at either of the above does not mean he would fair well on the streets. Its a different arena. Look at the codes of Rugby League and Rugby Union both are a game of rugby but only a handfull of professionals make a successfull switch from one game to the other! Just like MMA, Martial Arts, boxing and real fighting are all forms of combat, it doesn't mean that if your good in MMA your gonna thrash everyones arse on the street. Big mistake if you think so!

If you want to be good on the street train stuff that works and drop crap like arm locks and leg locks etc and focus on instinctive stuff like hard strikes(gross motor skills), weapon swinging, gun slinging, eye shots groin shots and biting.;-)

Oh and fighters are no different from joe public! We all get into fights at some time be it by starting it, getting involved or being started on. We're all human and thump is right everyman at some point wants to prove themselves.

If anyone is reading this and wants to know the best place to test themselves then my advice is to take up a combat sport and not to go down street and get messed up or worse.;-)

I see what you're saying Dave, but you wouldn't catch me starting trouble 'on the streets', and any self-respecting martial artist would feel the same i'm sure.

True, some people will get a bit power hungry, but like i say, they're the exception to the rule when it comes to any type of fighter who trains seriously in martial arts.

Plus nobody said that MMA fighters would be top-dog when it comes to a street fight, but let's face it, a trained conditioned MMA fighter will fair better than say a TKD student.

Don't forget, MMA fighters don't just go for the fancy arm-bars, never heard of ground n' pound Dave? :-p

i too will never start a fight, i have had all manner of people start fights with me and i've walked away, i dont need to prove anything to anybody. for those who feel they need to prove something you need to be a bit more secure within yourself.

Yeah i think i might of heard of ground & pound at some point, although i could be wrong. Maybe in a porno movie!;-)

I'd quite enjoy watching an MMA athlete doing G 'n' P in the street but the part where a bystander boots him in the head and then does the river dance on his napper for being silly would be a shame to watch.

MMA is a sport robsco just like tkd and both have loads of techniques that would work in the street and loads of techniques that wouldnt so it boils down to the guy in the fight.

So called 'dirty fighting' or street fighting can cancle out a guys stamina, power, technique etc. In a real fight your fighting for your life as you never know what the other person is going to do to you.
In combat sports including MMA, your not fighting for your life , your fighting to win because you like competing, or for money or for a belt etc. Of course there is a chance of being hurt but your not fighting for your life. Just thought id say because people still seem to think MMA, combat sports and street fighting are one in the same and that what they do in the dojo will work in the street. Well it wont. Those that have experienced it will understand, and those that havent will believe that what im saying is rubbish. Thats fine.:-D

We all compete in every aspect of our lives at some point beit to prove to yourself or someone else that you can do something well or better than others. Its human nature.

For those of you who dont feel secure inside then go and try Yoga and meditation classes and perhaps go to church on sundays.;-):-)) Then you will be at one with yourself and those around you.;-) Once you feel secure inside young grasshopper's you may proceed to da temple.:-p

Dave, you've not heard of ground n' pound before, so it seems like you need some education about MMA.

I see what you're saying, and appreciate it all, but you don't know enough about MMA to give the opinion you're trying to.

And please don't try to compare TKD to MMA, or any style to MMA, cos' MMA contains the lot, plus many 'dirty' tactics.

When you fight at pro level in MMA you know it's 'anything goes', unlike other competition styles with so many rules, so you feel much less safe in MMA.

Firstly and most importantly, from my experience of watching street fights and ufc lets say, there is definately not much difference albiet there are a few rules.I grew up in a area were street fights were common has i'm sure some of you have, and the likeness would be good enough to convict you in court. My believe is although it is a sport i certainly would not like to be in a street fight or a competition like a mma tournament. So credit goes to the all the men that put them in a realistic situation by entering these competition(even the losers). But i still believe it is ego that drives a man to go to such measure's.If i believed i could win gold in a mma tourament i would enter and it would take pride on my shelf, but i guess thats just my ego.
P.S HOPE I'M NOT TO LATE WELL DONE ANDY

A non-martial arts magazine here in Poland did a quickie review of different arts and said what was good about each and the drawbacks when considering street fights. BJJ was graded as something like, "either the ultimate martial art or a great way to get your head kicked in by his mates"

Seriously tho, I return to an earlier question. What is a 'real' street fight? I've seen a load of fights that never went to ground (or rather, two people never went to ground). Are these less than real? there was blood involved.

Just think its a different world in MMA there is a ref to pull them off you when your getting your head rocked whereas on the street its normally him and his mates riverdancing on your head till they cant be arsed anymore.....

Also the majority of fights ive ended up in my adult life has normally been some pissed up tit who cant fight anyway.....

Rob i was being sarcastic regarding ground and pound. Ive been following MMA since i first saw royce in ufc 1 way back in 96 so i understand it very well.

So your telling me that in pro MMA that its anything goes? Really? Ok so then it must be street fighting then! Give me a break man. Pro MMA has shit loads of rules and is a sport for christs sake. Tell me if any of the following are a allowed in MMA: Biting, eye gouging, groin shots, fish hooking, kicking with shoes or boots on, the use of any type of weapon or the help of a friend or bystander to come and stove your opponants head in? Bouncing a guys head of a curb or on a wall?

Also what makes you think MMA is much more effective than tkd on the streets? Tkd has loads of great strikes that do work. True also that it has loads of shit ones that wouldnt work.

If any of you think pro MMA has little or no rules then buy a UFC or Pride FC DVD and check out the rules sections or recorded rules meetings and you make your mind up if it is as they say "NO RULES" or "ANYTHING GOES" fighting.;-)

In the early days of MMA, yup, many of rules didn't exist.

Comparing MMA to TKD? Well, MMA uses what works from ANY style, so I'd rather be a pro trained MMA fighter in a street situation rather than a TKD expert.

True, there's no multiple attackers in a cage, but in that sort of situation, any sensible person would run, and no MMA fighter is gonna try and take a gang on. Surely if they did we'd hear about it everyday in papers or on the web? any examples? :-p

If MMA fighters did go around starting street fights, wouldn't we all hear about it? I don't know of any, do you?
